Dietary studies of marine species constitute an important key to improve the understanding of its biology and of its role in the ecosystem. Thus, prey-predator relationships structure and determine population dynamics and the trophic network at the ecosystem scale. Among the major study sites, the marine ecosystem is submitted to natural and anthropogenic constraints. In the North-Eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Biscay is a large open area surrounded South by Spain and East by France. This bay is an historic place of intense fishery activities for which the main small pelagic species targeted are the pilchard, Sardina pilchardus and the anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus. The aim of this work is to analyze the trophic ecology of these two small...

Malet, Nathalie; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Haure, Joel.
Japanese oysters previously reared in controlled conditions were replaced into the Marennes Oléron Bay on intertidal oyster parks during 2002 summertime. Kinetics of carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios was followed in 5 organs (digestive gland, gills, mantle, muscle and gonads). Results confirmed excepted significant differences in isotopie signatures between organs and revealed differences in the time required reaching equilibrium with the isotopie signatures of local food sources.

Bodin, Nathalie.
Marine decapod crustaceans are macrobenthic opportunist species, of great commercial interest, and can accumulate pollutants. Worrying about consumers' safety, polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polybromodiphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) and dioxins (PCDD/Fs) were analyzed in four crustacean species from the coastal waters of Brittany and Normandy. As regards to regulations, the consumption of crustacean muscle doesn't raise any health problems. The second objective of this study was to evaluate the biological processes influencing PCB bioaccumulation in the spider crab Maja brachydactyla. From a quantitative point of view, organotropism, diet and age were the major factors acting on contamination. From a qualitative point of view, PCB fingerprints depended on sex, and to...

Malet, Nathalie.
Trophic transfers of particulate organic matter sources to the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas were investigated in the oyster farming bay of Marennes-Oléron for two years. Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen were used to trace the origin and fate of primary production and organic matter inputs into the bay, and to depict trophic transfers to oysters that were experimentally reared according to traditional methods. Characterizing particulate organic matter sources available for oysters utilized a combination of hydrobiological parameters and stable isotope ratios. Processes of food incorporation by oysters were described for five organs such as gills, digestive gland, mantle, muscle and gonads, and were interpreted taking into account...

Androuin, Thibault.
The slipper limpet (Crepidula fornicata) is an invasive species of European coasts. Protandric hermaphrodite, this gregarious species forms individuals' stacks which accumulate in high density on bottom. For a long time considered as a detrimental invader, the slipper limpet is also an ecosystem engineer, modifying its habitat both physically and biologically. It is model to study how invasive and engineer species can structure and modify the ecosystem that they colonize. In this Ph.D. thesis, these effects have been examined through the trophic functioning of habitats colonized by the slipper limpet, with a special reference to the primary benthic production. Experimental stimulation of subtidal microphytobenthos (MPB) has been demonstrated by the...

Ferraton, Franck.
European hake (Merluccius merluccius) is a commercial and ecological important species in the Gulf of Lions. Juveniles are mainly located on the continental shelf, and abundance of smaller individuals (< 15 cm) is highest during spring in deeper areas principally. Juvenile hake (5 to 24 cm) density, relative condition factor, food resources and food web structure were investigated in four locations of the continental shelf (distributed with depth : shallow-deep, and distance from the Rhone river mouth : Rhone-Agde) during three springs (2002-2003-2004). Changes of food resources were identified with hake length, spatio-temporal variations were also observed for smaller juveniles (< 15 cm). Despite of hake prey diversity, the same organic source is at...

Massey, Jean-laurent.
In relation with meteorological, hydrological and topographic characteristics, Corsica has a very large number of temporarily open/closed micro-estuaries. Agriates contains several of them, including the Fiume Santu’s temporarily micro-estuary. These ecosystems are specific because of their sporadic connection with the sea. The opening and closure depends on both the river flow and the presence of the Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile “banquettes”. Characterization of the global functioning was based on a multiparameter approach (particulate matter and dissolved inorganic matter descriptors, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope, phytoplankton communities), in order to qualify and quantify the organic matter (OM), along an estuary – coastal zone gradient. The OM...

Roos, David; Aumond, Yoann; Huet, Jerome; Bruchon, Franck.

Stable isotopes (C-13/C-12 and N-15/N-14) in settling organic matter of the northwestern Mediterranean Sea: biogeochemical implications ArchiMer
Kerherve, P; Minagawa, M; Heussner, S; Monaco, A.
Within the framework of the High Frequency Flux (HFF) experiment (MATER programme), time-series sediment traps have been deployed for two months on the continental slope off Marseilles to measure downward particle fluxes at a high frequency sampling rate (two and six days). Combined isotopic analyses of carbon and nitrogen have been performed on selected samples. Both isotopic tracers have been used for the first time on organic material of the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lions) to determine the main biological sources and to address the biogeochemical processes that affected this material. Settling particles were characterised by very low values of delta N-15 (near 0 parts per thousand) and delta C-13 (near -24.5 parts per thousand) that indicate the...
